Features: The 7th "Huanai Huai" China Interior Design Competition, organized by the China Institute of Architecture Interior Design Branch in 2003, reflects the trajectory of China's interior design development over the past seven years. Through years of design practice and theoretical discussions by designers, the industry has gradually moved away from a form-focused approach to a greater emphasis on the substance of design. This includes considering functional requirements, circulation organization, and the physical environment as well as cultural sophistication of interiors. Years of relentless effort have led to continuous improvement in design quality, with works gradually maturing. The competition has timely mirrored these changes in the design field. Through national tours of winning entries, selected works collections, and CD releases, the results are presented to designers and the public for observation and exchange. New design concepts are rapidly gaining acceptance, elevating the level of China's interior design year by year. These emerging works, in turn, influence other designers. The competition serves as a powerful catalyst for the advancement of China's interior design. However, many challenges remain, such as human-centered design, green design, sustainability, the application of new technologies, the full utilization of natural energy, and the selection of eco-friendly decorative materials. These issues demand further thought, research, and exploration by designers, and future competitions will continue to address them.
The scale of the 2003 competition was 1.5 times that of 2002, with over 1,000 participating projects, 1,585 display panels, and a total of 2,457 participants—exceeding any previous edition. A notable feature of this year's entries was the narrowing gap in design quality, with regional differences also gradually diminishing. At the same time, the emergence of new talent became a highlight of the competition. Among the award-winning designers, many new faces of middle-aged and young designers were seen, indicating the growing strength of the interior design profession. This is an era of rising talent, with a large number of outstanding middle-aged and young designers now forming the backbone of China's interior design industry.
Huanai Group not only sponsored this competition but also, in collaboration with the institute, organized designer salons in ten major cities before the event to promote and mobilize participation. Their contributions played a crucial role in advancing the competition, and we extend our sincere gratitude. We look forward to the support and participation of all interior designers and believe that future competitions will be even more successful.
