How to distinguish nipple discharge

Patient's question:

Recently, I suddenly found painless, palpable lumps in the outer upper or inner upper quadrants of my breasts. Later, I noticed that the lumps could adhere to the skin and form a mass. How to distinguish nipple discharge?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, one needs to observe the color of the discharge. If it is brown, it is rarely bloody, and the discharge test also shows a large number of plasma cells and lymphocytes without tumor cells. This condition is more common in women over 40 who are not breastfeeding or in menopause. Additionally, it is more prevalent in women of reproductive age. In some cases, the breast discharge of this condition is yellow-green, brown, bloody, or colorless serous-like, and more people with tumor cells absent in the discharge test.
