Features: This book is divided into 20 series: ancient towns, gardens, academies, ancestral halls, opera stages, pavilions, temples, Taoist temples, Confucian temples, and official residences, etc. It aims to reflect the historical cultural relics and old buildings within the former Shanghai region. There are currently over 70 famous above-ground architectural heritage sites remaining from Shanghai's history. These old buildings embody the long history of Shanghai architecture, ancient construction techniques, and unique architectural styles. They have made innovative contributions in architectural space planning, construction techniques, and material application, holding significant importance in the history of Chinese architecture.
From a typological perspective, the main categories include residential buildings, official offices, temples, pavilions, towers, city walls, screen walls, and memorial arches. In terms of scale, since ancient Shanghai was not the national political, economic, or cultural center, the buildings were not large in volume. However, these old buildings carry specific cultural connotations of Shanghai and serve as examples of high levels of architectural technology and artistry. Due to Shanghai's unique historical status, there are over 80 historically documented ancient Taoist temples and nunneries. The remaining Buddhist temples in Shanghai include Longhua Temple, Jing'an Temple, and Jade Buddha Temple. Notable Taoist temples include Baiyun Temple, Qinci's Hall, Chenghuang Temple, and Chongfu Taoist Temple. These ancient religious buildings are valuable heritage sites of Shanghai's old architecture.
Currently, Shanghai preserves relatively well-preserved ancient residential buildings with significant cultural heritage value, mainly located in the old city area, Songjiang, Jiading, and Pudong New Area. With its unique historical and cultural roots and a wealth of skilled craftsmen, Shanghai has developed its own architectural style and sophisticated spatial composition art under the influence of high cultural and artistic standards. These features represent an important source of inspiration for the architectural design of ancient water towns in the Jiangnan region.
