Features: In China, the history of teaching Malay is relatively short, and only Beijing Foreign Studies University offers this major nationwide. As a result, teaching experience and teaching materials are quite limited. In the past, we directly used textbooks published in Malaysia as the main teaching materials, but practice showed that this approach was not entirely appropriate. This is because our students are not learning the language in a Malaysian-speaking environment. Before starting their studies, they have never been exposed to Malay and must learn the basics. However, they possess general language knowledge at the high school level, with strong abilities in understanding and using language. Textbooks published in Malaysia, which are suitable for beginners, are aimed at primary school students. Whether in terms of content or language, they are heavily childish, making them not only amusing and boring for adults to read but also unsuitable for their language level. On the other hand, textbooks designed for adult learners are too advanced for our students. To resolve this contradiction and achieve a more ideal teaching effect, we had to write our own basic course textbooks. When compiling these textbooks, I focused on the following two characteristics: First, Malay is a relatively standardized and easy-to-learn language. Second, the target audience is university students with high school-level language knowledge. Based on these characteristics, I believed it was possible to accelerate the pace of basic course teaching, and this idea is reflected in this textbook. To help students familiarize themselves with and master authentic Malay as early as possible, most of the texts in this textbook are original works (avoiding the drawback of previous basic course textbooks where most content was translated text). This set of textbooks strives to embody scientific rigor, knowledge, practicality, and. However, due to the limited expertise of the authors, there may be shortcomings, and we hope to receive feedback from fellow educators. The manuscript of this textbook was piloted with two batches of students, during which valuable suggestions were provided by two teachers from the Malay Language Teaching and Research Office—Zhao Yuezhen and Sun Baoping—and feedback was collected from students. Additionally, in the language section of the textbook, reference was made to the "Malay Pronunciation Textbook" compiled by Associate Professor Wu Zongyu.
