I have been on medication for a month, and there is a little blood. What's going on?

Patient's question:

I'm only 26 this year. Because of having sex with my boyfriend many times, I got pregnant. I've been on medication for an abortion for about a month. Yesterday, I had a little bit of bleeding, and today it stopped. So I want to ask what's going on?

Doctor's answer:

After medication abortion, it is generally recommended to have a follow-up ultrasound examination one week later. If there is residual tissue in the uterine cavity, a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) should be performed promptly to prevent persistent vaginal bleeding, menstrual disorders, or secondary infections caused by uterine residue. If there is no persistent vaginal bleeding after medication abortion, and the menstrual volume increases significantly after the next menstrual period, it is likely that menstrual disorders have recurred post-abortion, leading to irregular menstruation. A follow-up ultrasound can be conducted to assess the condition of the endometrium.
