Does ectopic pregnancy cause hCG to rise?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my wife is pregnant, it's an ectopic pregnancy. I want to know if hCG levels will drop in ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

If you are pregnant, under normal circumstances, a 40-day delay in menstruation should allow for an ultrasound, where the gestational sac can be seen within the uterine cavity. At this point, the possibility of ectopic pregnancy can be ruled out. However, if the gestational sac is not observed within the uterine cavity at 40 days of pregnancy, this could be a sign of ectopic pregnancy and requires careful examination for confirmation.
But in cases of ectopic pregnancy, the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) detected through a urine test will also decline, but not as significantly as in a normal pregnancy. For example, the decline in its levels may not be as pronounced.
