Do you need to take birth control pills again after sexual activity?

Patient's question:

Doctor, hello. I have been living with my boyfriend for a while now, and we had sex yesterday. This morning, I already took emergency contraception. Then, we had sex again at night. I am not ready to have a child right now. Should I take another pill?

Doctor's answer:

The last time you had sex, don't take the birth control pill again. Emergency contraception pills are generally effective if taken within 72 hours after sexual intercourse. However, it is not recommended to take emergency contraception pills frequently, as it can easily lead to endocrine disorders, and in severe cases, it may cause secondary amenorrhea. Generally, no more than two doses should be taken within a year. If you do not plan to have a baby, it is recommended to use contraceptive measures such as condoms, short-term birth control pills, or long-term birth control pills.
