Hu Shi's Outlines of the History of Chinese Philosophy was finalized in September 1918. Upon its publication, it garnered significant attention due to its innovative methods and perspectives, and within three years, it was reprinted seven times. The book is hailed as "the first work to systematically study the history of ancient Chinese philosophy using modern academic methods," and its publication is considered a milestone in the establishment of the discipline of the history of Chinese philosophy. Although only the first volume was published, its achievements and characteristics were sufficient to open up entirely new horizons for later historians of philosophy. The book also includes Hu Shi's other masterpiece, Chronicles of Master Zhang Shizhao, which, with its extensive and meticulous research, innovative format, and objective commentary, set new standards for biographical writing.
