Does the cerebellomedullary cistern need to be punctured?

Patient's question:

The results of this prenatal examination are very serious now. The cisterna magna of the cerebellum and medulla oblongata is 1.1 cm. Should I have an abortion? Is there a chance to save it?

Doctor's answer:

The cisterna magna of the fetal cerebellomedullary cistern is 1.1 cm, which is considered an abnormal fetal soft marker. If this condition reappears, further fetal brain MRI is recommended to examine whether there are any abnormalities in the important structures within the fetal cranial cavity. Is there any absence? If any important structures are found to be absent or show abnormal development, there is no chance for correction after birth, and it is recommended to consider mid-trimester induction of labor. If the MRI does not reveal any abnormalities and the cisterna magna is less than 13 mm, it is still not possible to definitively diagnose fetal hydrocephalus, and further follow-up and examinations are required.
