Features: Sir Aurel Stein, a British archaeologist, is one of the founders of international Dunhuang studies. Japan holds a very important position in the international system of Dunhuang studies and has long influenced the development trends of this field, to the extent that there is a saying abroad: "Dunhuang is in China, but Dunhuang studies are in Japan." Stein had a positive impact on the origins of Japanese Dunhuang studies and maintained close relationships with Japanese Dunhuang scholars for a long time. The author began collecting Japanese materials on the history of Japanese Dunhuang studies in Japan in 1991 and started organizing and translating English materials related to the history of Japanese Dunhuang studies from the British Stein archives in 1989. Through comprehensive interpretation and research, this book has been formed. In addition to systematically narrating the activities of Japanese Dunhuang scholars investigating and organizing Stein's collected materials based on Japanese historical records, this book focuses on publishing a large number of English materials on the history of Japanese Dunhuang studies from the manuscripts of Stein held by the University of Oxford in the UK. These include correspondence between Stein and Japanese Dunhuang scholars, travel diaries and travel writings written by Stein in Japan, and more. The content of this book is mostly research findings published for the first time in the world, both as new achievements in Stein studies and as new achievements in the study of the history of Japanese Dunhuang studies, filling many gaps in international academia. The book includes 42 sections and 3 appendices.
