Features: Belladetto Marcello (1686-1739) was born into a noble Venetian family. At his father's request, he studied law, but also learned composition from Gasparini and Lotteri. After completing his studies, he was elected as one of the 40 members of the Venetian Council. In 1728, he served as the governor of Pola for the Republic of Venice, and later, from 1737, as the court minister of Brescia. Despite his lifelong career as a civil servant, he remained devoted to the arts. He was a member of the Accademia degli Umoristi, the literary society, and the Accademia Filarmonica. On the title pages of his printed works, he proudly called himself a "Venetian noble amateur of counterpoint," an amateur musician of Venetian nobility. Marcello's works include cantatas, didactic music, five concertos, and sonatas for flute, cello, and harpsichord. His satirical opera works, such as The Fashionable Theatre, were also widely known. In 1737, his six trios for two cellos and basso continuo were published in Amsterdam. The International Catalogue of Musical Works lists two surviving manuscripts of these sonatas. The present edition is based on a set preserved in the Royal College of Music Library in Stockholm. This book includes the 4th to 6th sonatas.
