Features: A group of painters in the Lingnan region who embraced democratic ideas and studied abroad innovatively blended Western painting techniques, revolutionizing traditional Chinese painting and forming a novel and unique artistic style. The Lingnan School painters explicitly proposed the artistic principle of "reconciling Eastern and Western, integrating ancient and modern" and bravely explored and realized the ideal of reforming traditional painting. This series selects 15 important, influential, and representative Chinese painting schools from numerous traditions, providing comprehensive and systematic discussions and evaluations. The time span covers over 1,000 years, from the Five Dynasties (907) to the modern era (1951), involving more than 1,200 painters, art theorists, and others, with subjects including landscape, flower-and-bird, and figure painting. Essentially, each painting school was formed on the foundation of predecessors, referencing nature, drawing from folk art, and absorbing the influence of foreign art. The emergence of each new school took Chinese painting art a step forward. Therefore, this series can be considered, to some extent, a history of the evolution, transformation, and development of Chinese painting. It also provides historical insights into debates about Chinese painting, revealing its boundless vitality.
