Does uterine fibroids cause stomach pain during menstruation?

Patient's question:

I am 25 years old and have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Do uterine fibroids cause abdominal pain during menstruation?

Doctor's answer:

Nodular uterine fibroids are generally not painful on their own. It depends on the size of the fibroids, whether they are less than 5 cm or larger; the growth location, whether they are submucosal, intramural, or subserosal; and whether there is any degeneration, such as red degeneration or white degeneration. If there is red degeneration, it will cause pain. Additionally, a small portion of fibroids may lead to adenomyoma. It is important to determine if this is the case. If it is adenomyoma, it will cause severe pain during menstruation. If it is simply a small fibroid, it is generally not painful.
