Can ectopic pregnancy be detected with a pregnancy test?

Patient's question:

Doctor, I'm questioning that I might be pregnant recently, but both my husband and I are not ready for a child right now. Also, I think it might be an ectopic pregnancy because my periods haven't been regular for these past few months. Hello doctor, can an early pregnancy test detect ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

An ectopic pregnancy cannot be detected through careful examination with early pregnancy test strips. Early pregnancy test strips can confirm pregnancy, but they cannot determine the specific location of the fertilized egg. Diagnosis requires a combination of medical history, clinical symptom assessment, blood hCG tests, and abdominal ultrasound examinations. In a normal pregnancy, around 40 days, an abdominal ultrasound can visualize the gestational sac within the uterine cavity. If no gestational sac is observed, further examination and diagnosis are necessary.
