Features: This book is a continuation of the three-volume "Selected Works of Alain Robbe-Grillet." The Snapshots (1954-1962) is a collection of short stories, and For a New Novel (1955-1963) is a collection of essays. Throughout Robbe-Grillet's writing career, the proportion of short stories and essays was relatively small. Robbe-Grillet himself did not consider his essays to constitute a theory of the novel; they were merely attempts to trace certain developments that he believed were quite crucial in contemporary literature. However, if we are to restore the status of "unmotivated art" today, it is unlikely that in the past half-century, there could be more direct and persuasive statements than these straightforward arguments.
