Can uterine fibroids be seen with transvaginal ultrasound?

Patient's question:

My uterus has been a bit raw these past two days. At first, I thought it was my period, but later realized it wasn't. Additionally, I have a lump in my abdomen, and it causes pain when touched. The doctor suggested that this might be due to an uterine fibroid and recommended an ultrasound. Could you please tell me if uterine fibroids can be detected through a transvaginal ultrasound?

Doctor's answer:

Uterine fibroids are a common benign inflammatory condition in women. Generally, patients can undergo a thorough examination with abdominal ultrasound after fully emptying their bladders. However, sometimes a vaginal ultrasound is also performed. Because vaginal ultrasound provides more accurate assessments of the size and location of uterine fibroids compared to abdominal ultrasound, with better resolution. However, married women or those with vaginal abrasions cannot undergo vaginal ultrasound.
