Features: An important work in the history of Western linguistics. Many translations of such works have been published domestically in the past, especially those by the Commercial Press, which have been widely disseminated. Works like Saussure's Cours de linguistique générale in the 20th century, Sapir's Language, Bloomfield's Language, Herder's On the Origin of Language in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Humboldt's On the Diversity of Human Language Structure and Its Influence on the Development of the Human Mind are all universally recognized classics. The translation of renowned works is a fundamental task for understanding and researching the history of Western linguistics. In this regard, we have achieved remarkable success, but there is still much work to be done. For example, the General Rational Grammar co-authored by the Frenchmen Arnauld and Lancelot in the mid-17th century, Paul's Principles of Language History in the late 19th century, and the Essence, Development, and Origin of Language by the Dane Jespersen in the 20th century. The collected works of the American Wolof on On Language, Thought, and Reality, and others, are all works that should have been translated but remain untranslated. Even for figures like Humboldt, Sapir, and Bloomfield, though their major works have already been translated into Chinese, their important papers from different periods still need translation. This Translation Series is designed to fill the gaps in the Chinese translations of works by renowned Western linguists. The selection criteria are broadly divided into four aspects: prioritizing collected works while including individual books; focusing on works that have not yet been translated into Chinese while also considering retranslations of masterpieces; emphasizing well-established classics while incorporating influential contemporary works; and highlighting works that embody humanistic philosophy while also accommodating analytical techniques.
