Features: The Director of the Jiangbin City Commercial Bank and the Financial Director of the Jiangbin City Integrity Group were suddenly shot and killed. Huge amounts of money from the bank and the group went missing. Detective Zhao Jianming of the Criminal Investigation Brigade of Jiangbin Branch of the Yangtze River Public Security Bureau was investigating the case and pursuing the murderer when he discovered that the true culprit hidden behind the scenes was actually Wu Haotian, his childhood friend. Wu Haotian, as a law master, had worked as a legal reporter and lawyer, possessing extremely high intelligence and a refined cultural background. To obstruct Zhao Jianming's case resolution, he used various means to create various cases, and the two former friends engaged in a life-and-death battle of wits, both openly and secretly.
Zhao Jianming and Wu Haotian were also caught in a family emotional crisis: Zhao Jianming's wife, Jiang Rong, was Wu Haotian's first love during his rural days; Lin Kerong, Wu Haotian's wife, was Zhao Jianming's classmate at the Law and Politics University, whom he had once rejected. Faced with reason and emotion, justice and evil, they experienced a series of tragedies.
With his keen and unique perception, plain yet unadorned writing style, and smooth and flowing rhythm, the author interprets to readers the inevitable fake, ugly, and evil in society during China's current economic transformation period, as well as the corruption in official circles and the dangers in business. Their desires intertwine in reality, and those who are helpless cannot resist the temptation of desire and money, gradually stepping into the traps they set themselves. Therefore, this is not a traditional police procedural novel—it is not only because it directly depicts the Yangtze River water police, but it does not confine itself to crime and case resolution. Instead, it uses them as a carrier,, and it is believed that after reading it, readers will appreciate the deeper meanings beyond the novel. This book has been adapted into a television series with the same title and will soon be broadcast on China Central Television.
