This book is the new long-form picture book by Jimi following Subway, a gift from Jimi for the Spring Festival of 2003. The long-form storytelling of the picture book poet has always been captivating, like the poetry-like The Lucky One. The inspiration for this story came from Jimi's 1999 work Smiling Fish. When he drew fish smiling, he thought, "Why not draw a Sad Bird?" The story kept evolving, and by 2001, Jimi began working on it. His brush was dampened and dried, the ink tones shifted from dark to light, and the writing and revisions continued until the end of 2002. The Lucky One tells a story that is both fortunate and sorrowful. Who is the lucky one? Is it Jimi? Or is it you and me? This is a book of compassion and legend, dedicated to the lucky ones.
