Features: The selected articles in this book, including the "Preface," total twenty pieces, most of which have been fully reproduced by the Renmin University of China Data Center. Based on their nature, they can be divided into five groups.
Group 1 (5 articles): These are general discussions. A Brief Discussion on the Relationship Between Classics and History presents the fundamental views of the book's theme. Confucianism and Feudal Politics and Confucian Culture and the Awareness of Crisis provide comprehensive discussions on Confucianism but are written from a historical perspective. On the "Family Tradition of Comprehensive History" is a historiographical article. It was selected not only because it won the Excellent Paper Award from Historical Research and received positive responses domestically but also because advocates of the "family tradition of comprehensive history" are all renowned Confucian thinkers. The Cultivation of Historians and Reflections on Historiography discusses the subjectivity of historians, which is the content of intellectual history.
Group 2 (4 articles): These focus on pre-Qin Confucianism. A Historical Examination of the Ethical Views of the Pre-Qin Scholars and Mozi's Views on Meritocracy and Universal Love are the results of research conducted in the early 1960s and published in newspapers in the 1980s. They reflect the dedication of my mentor, Mr. Tong, who passed away early. I include this book as a tribute to his memory. Pre-Qin Scholars and the Hundred Schools Contention was written based on early research and incorporates new insights from academia.
Group 3 (2 articles): These belong to the period of Confucianism.
