Features: Chinese landscape painting has a profound and long-standing history. Initially, it appeared as patterns of mountains and rivers or backgrounds for figure paintings. Gradually, it separated from figure painting, strengthening its independent aesthetic significance. Simultaneously, within the flourishing atmosphere of landscape poetry, it gained the opportunity to develop as an independent genre. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, landscape painting matured.
In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Gu Kaizhi's Record of Painting Cloud Mountain provides a complete account of the composition and layout of landscape paintings. Song Zongbing's Preface to Landscape Painting is the first treatise on landscape painting. Examining surviving artworks, we can see the rudiments of natural elements such as sun, moon, mountains, rivers, trees, rocks, buildings, and boats in Han Dynasty murals. It was not until the "Dao Gang Rising Without Violence" section in Gu Kaizhi's Admonitions to the Court Ladies (Tang Dynasty copy) that the intention to treat mountains and rivers as the main subject in composition began to emerge.
The legendary Spring Outing by Zhan Daoqing (Song Dynasty copy) marks the independence of landscape painting as a distinct genre. Whether in terms of composition, the organic integration of elements, or the overall rendering of artistic conception, it achieved a realm where depicting objects, expressing emotions, and portraying scenes converged. Landscape painting embarked on an independent path of development in practice.
Over a thousand years of evolution, landscape painting has been continuously enriched by talented artists of each era, deepening its content, meaning, and expressive forms. They have established various typical styles and techniques. Miniature landscape paintings reflect the trajectory of landscape painting's development while showcasing their own artistic charm and formal characteristics.
