What causes vulvar leukoplakia?

Patient's question:

I usually pay close attention to hygiene, especially taking extra care of the vagina. However, for the past two months, I don't know why, it suddenly started itching, and the itching is very painful. I also noticed that there were many white spots of different sizes on the outside of the vagina. The doctor said it was vulvar leukoplakia and prescribed many medications for treatment, but none of them have shown any effect.

Doctor's answer:

Vulvar leukoplakia includes of the vulvar skin and mucosa, a group of chronic diseases that cause degeneration and changes in pigmentation of the vulvar skin and mucosa. Due to the inflammation of the skin and mucosa often appearing white, it is also referred to as vulvar white lesions. It manifests as a skin disease based on pruritus of the vulva and atrophy and thinning of the vulvar and perianal skin. It is recommended to visit a regular hospital for follow-up examination and careful diagnosis. Attention should be paid to maintaining dry and clean vulvar skin at all times, and strictly prohibited from applying other irritating drugs.
