Can a urinalysis and ultrasound detect ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I still have irregular bleeding. On the 15th, I took emergency contraception, and by the 20th, I started bleeding. It has been intermittent and continuous, but the amount is quite minimal (compared to my last period on March 5th). The day before yesterday, I had a urine test and ultrasound, both of which were negative. I don't understand the ultrasound results, but the doctor said it's just hormonal disruption caused by emergency contraception. However, I've been experiencing breast tenderness for a week, slight nausea in the morning, and still irregular bleeding. Could it be an ectopic pregnancy? The blood is bright red.

Doctor's answer:

The previous diagnosis given by the doctor should be correct, so this situation is not much related to ectopic pregnancy. If it were ectopic pregnancy, the urine test would also show a positive reaction, and the ultrasound could also see the ectopic gestational sac. Now, both of the above two detailed examinations are normal, which means you are not suffering from ectopic pregnancy. In normal people, HCG levels are usually below 3.1. If it is below 5, it can be considered that delivery might be possible. If it is below 10, it can be basically confirmed that you are pregnant. In fact, having ectopic pregnancy is not terrible. The patient should believe that they can overcome the illness. As long as the symptoms are detected in time and symptomatic treatment is provided, the chances of controlling the condition and recovering are very high.
