Features: The hand-held book, known as "jinxiang," originated in the Southern Qi Dynasty and flourished during the Song Dynasty. From the Ming and Qing dynasties onwards, new designs emerged each generation. The term "jinxiang" referred to small portable boxes used for carrying miscellaneous items like handkerchiefs. In ancient times, travelers and scholars would recite texts while traveling or resting, and books were always kept close at hand. Thus, the size of these books was reduced to fit into the jinxiang, making them convenient to carry while traveling and easy to read while resting, as well as a source of enjoyment during leisure time. Although the hand-held book is considered a minor genre in the world of books, it upholds the principle of Confucius, "Learn and practice it in time," and has made significant contributions. Regrettably, in recent times, with the influence of Western culture, books have increasingly adopted Western-style bindings, becoming more elaborate and cumbersome. Carrying them is like a cow bearing a heavy load, and reading them at night is difficult for even a short time. Worse still, some publishers prioritize outward appearance over substance, favoring heavy cases over valuable content, misleading readers and straying far from the true essence and joy of reading.
The ancient society's jinxiang books were created with purpose, drawing on the successes and failures of jinxiang books throughout history. The aim is to return to simplicity and elegance, promoting national heritage. The design should be small yet complete, the price should be affordable yet carefully selected for quality, the selection of titles should be appropriate yet emphasize personal taste and charm, and the organization should be logical yet allow for scattered purchases and collections to satisfy preferences. Additionally, fragrant covers, vivid printing, meticulous proofreading, and dynamic layouts are employed—this is what is meant by investing great effort and dedication into small books, making them irresistible upon first sight.
Mountains need not be high to be sacred; books need not be expensive to possess character. Thus, the name "Shuyun Tower" is chosen for the book series. Noble and refined individuals will surely appreciate its meaning. This is the preface.
