Publishing Date: 2004-04-01
Features: The author, Sun Cailin, styled Liangkui, also known as Zhuting, was originally from Chongchuan. He was a renowned physician of the Qing Dynasty. His father, Sun Tingwen, styled Yuxiang and known as Wo Zhou, wrote Cunxin Zhiyidan. Sun Cailin learned medicine from his father in his early years and later practiced medicine in Suzhou. His disciples, Cheng Dingzhi, Jin Chuanxun, as well as his nephew Sun Lansheng and Sun Qingsheng, and his sons Sun Hesheng and Sun Fengsheng, all followed in his footsteps. Zhuting Yidan consists of nine volumes, including six volumes on internal medicine and miscellaneous diseases (with a small number of surgical cases) and three volumes on gynecology. Because the author compiled the case histories accumulated over the years as pearls strung together, it is also known as Zhuizhu Bian. The book covers a wide range of diseases, such as colds and sore throats, damp toxins and summer heat, scrofula and smallpox, and cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, all of which are recorded in detail. Most of the cases are follow-up visits, providing readers with a more comprehensive understanding of the onset, development, and outcome of the cases. The discussions and annotations in the cases are often insightful, serving as the finishing touch. The prescriptions and medications reflect the balanced characteristics of Jiangnan physicians, with little use of harsh herbs. Even when aggressive remedies are necessary, follow-up treatments focus on strengthening the spleen and regulating the stomach, deeply embodying the three principles of TCM regulation. Additionally, "treating the root cause" is another distinctive feature of the Sun family. The original manuscript was collected by Gu Kunyi of Changshu. It is now organized based on a Qing Dynasty manuscript preserved in the Library of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, divided into two volumes: the first volume includes volumes one to five, and the second volume includes volumes six and the three volumes of gynecology.
