Will I get my period 15 days after taking medication for an abortion?

Patient's question:

Due to various reasons, I got pregnant unexpectedly. I went to a local clinic here and underwent medication-induced abortion. It has been almost half a month. Today, I noticed red discharge from my vagina, similar to menstruation. I want to ask if it's normal to have a menstrual period 15 days after medication-induced abortion, or if it means the procedure wasn't complete?

Doctor's answer:

Under normal circumstances, after medication abortion, menstruation may come a few days later than expected, but it will never occur 15 days after the procedure. If there is vaginal bleeding 15 days after medication abortion, this situation requires caution, as it may be due to retained products of conception, poor uterine involution, or intrauterine infection. An ultrasound examination can clarify the diagnosis. After diagnosis, active symptomatic treatment should be initiated, such as preventing infection and promoting uterine involution, while maintaining good hygiene of the external genitalia.
