When will menstruation come after a miscarriage?

Patient's question:

I've had a miscarriage for over a month now, but my period hasn't come yet. When is it supposed to come after a miscarriage?

Doctor's answer:

After a miscarriage, menstruation can usually return in about 1 month, or it may be delayed by a significant amount. About 1 month after a medication-induced abortion, the body's uterus and endometrium can approximately return to normal. Once the uterus and endometrium have fully recovered, menstruation can return to normal. The complete recovery after a medication-induced abortion is relatively slow. Within 3 months after a miscarriage, as long as menstruation occurs within the normal range, it is normal to temporarily wait and see if there are no discomforts.
