Features: Lin Liang was a Ming Dynasty painter, styled Yishan, and was from Nanhai (now Guangdong Province). He held the position of Jinweiwei Commandant and Zhenfu, serving in the Renzhi Hall. Yishan was renowned for his freehand bird-and-flower paintings. In his early works, he depicted colored flowers, fruits, and feathers with meticulous and exquisite techniques. Later, he followed the unrestrained and concise style of the Southern Song Dynasty, transforming his brushwork into rough, ink-based freehand painting, achieving outstanding success. In terms of expressive techniques, his vigorous and unrestrained brushwork possessed both swift and dynamic momentum while remaining relatively heavy and steady. Between the pauses and turns of his brushstrokes, he emphasized rules and discipline. Later generations praised his style for its forceful brushwork, likening it to calligraphy. His ink freehand bird-and-flower paintings stood out in the contemporary art scene, where the courtly style favored vibrant and skillful works. As a result, he was highly regarded by his contemporaries and had a significant influence on the bird-and-flower painting style of the mid-Ming Dynasty.
