In 1893, he became a sailor and began his career of maritime exploration. In 1896, he joined the gold rush, but did not become wealthy as a result. As one of the most popular and productive writers of his time, although Jack London received very little formal education, he completed self-education through extensive reading. The protagonists in many of his works, whether human or animal, struggle against the harsh reality. The Call of the Wild was published in 1903 and is considered one of Jack London's finest works. The protagonist in the book—Buck—a dog, struggles against cruelty and adversity, gradually learning to respond to the love of humans.
