I want to ask how does vulvar itching occur?

Patient's question:

Female, 30 years old, unmarried: Recently for the past year, she has frequently experienced vulvar itching, mainly on the vulva and inner thighs. After scratching, small bumps appear. It is particularly itchy at night.

Doctor's answer:

Vaginal itching is often caused by abnormal discharge from trichomoniasis or fungal infections leading to vaginitis, which irritates the external genitalia and causes pain. If antiseptic solutions are used to wash the external genitalia, vagina, or if certain medications (such as sulfonamides, furacilin, strongly alkaline soaps, or potassium permanganate solutions) are inserted into the vagina, it may trigger allergic reactions or recurrent dermatitis in the external genitalia, leading to itching. During menstruation, if hygiene is not maintained or rubber or plastic menstrual pads are used without frequent cleaning of the external genitalia, menstrual blood or vaginal secretions may accumulate for extended periods on the external genitalia.
