What is an ectopic pregnancy

Patient's question:

On December 14th, my period arrived. On December 21st, I took medicine (on the third day of intercourse). On January 1st, I took medicine (on the third day of intercourse). On January 13th, I felt severe breast tenderness and used a pregnancy test, which showed a faint positive result. In the afternoon of January 14th, I experienced abdominal pain and discomfort, and then had another period. Previously, my periods did not cause abdominal pain. On January 16th, I felt that my period had already passed. My usual period lasts 2-4 days, so I had intercourse once. After that, my body kept peeling, and there was a small amount of fragmented material coming out. On January 23rd, two pieces the size of one-yuan coins came out (after some abdominal pain). On January 20th, an ultrasound confirmed that there was no evidence of ectopic or normal pregnancy; it was normal. From January 14th to today, the peeling has been similar in amount to my usual period, with bright red color. Am I having a miscarriage? Is it ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

Ectopic pregnancy is also a form of pregnancy and will secrete HCG. Therefore, if you use a pregnancy test strip to test, it will also show positive. It is recommended to use a pregnancy test strip 7 days after the menstrual period delay. If it shows positive, you can go to a regular hospital for an ultrasound examination around 6-7 weeks after stopping menstruation to confirm whether it is an intrauterine pregnancy. It is recommended to go to a local authoritative and regular hospital for examination and treatment. If a pregnancy test strip HCG test is positive, and an abdominal ultrasound examination does not find a gestational sac in the uterine cavity, it is generally necessary to consider the possibility of ectopic pregnancy. However, first pay attention to whether the gestational sac is too small to be detected. If no gestational sac or other abnormalities are found, a re-examination should be performed after 7 days.
