Features: Higher vocational and technical education is an important part of China's higher education. Vigorously developing higher vocational and technical education and cultivating a considerable number of well-rounded higher vocational and technical applied talents who support the Party's basic line and are adaptable to production, construction, management, and service needs are an inevitable choice to achieve the goal of mass higher education in China. To achieve the training goal of higher vocational and technical applied talents, it is essential to improve textbook development. This textbook is based on the "Basic Requirements for English Teaching in Adult Higher Education in China (Non-English Major, Junior College Level)" issued by the former State Education Commission in 1997 (hereinafter referred to as "Basic Requirements"). The objective of this series of textbooks is: (1) to enable students to master certain basic knowledge and skills in English; (2) to equip students with the ability to read and translate relevant business English materials; (3) to help students develop preliminary skills for conducting simple daily and foreign-related conversations; (4) to cultivate students' ability to draft simple business letters and other foreign-related business documents. The vocabulary starting point of this textbook is 800 words, divided into two parts. The upper part primarily aims to help students with English proficiency below the level specified in the "Basic Requirements" review and consolidate the pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary learned in middle school, laying a foundation for further study. The lower part focuses on basic grammar and sentence patterns, as well as training in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills. It emphasizes integrating language proficiency training with practical foreign-related activities, ensuring that adult English learners can adhere to the principle of learning and applying from the beginning. While emphasizing the training of basic reading skills and improving grammar application abilities, comprehensive training in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation continues, along with introducing the reading, translation, and drafting of foreign-related materials. The training of reading, translation, and writing skills is prioritized, with the ultimate goal of cultivating students' ability to use English to handle foreign-related activities in business work. To facilitate beginners in using and learning, basic phonetic knowledge and basic grammatical knowledge are provided after each unit.
