How long after taking medication does the test paper show negative?

Patient's question:

After taking medication for an abortion, a positive result still appears on an early pregnancy test one week later. How long after taking medication for an abortion does the test paper show a negative result?

Doctor's answer:

For women undergoing medication-induced abortion, if the gestational sac and decidua tissue completely detach and dry up within about 20 days after the medication abortion, the result of the early pregnancy test will turn negative. If the gestational sac is not completely expelled after medication abortion or if there is residual decidua tissue, the time it takes for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to return to a negative result will be extended by approximately one month. Additionally, there may be intermittent and incomplete bleeding (lochia) and abdominal pain. In most cases, a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) procedure will be necessary.
