Can you still get pregnant after tubal removal?

Patient's question:

I need to have this fallopian tube removed due to this body condition. Will I still be able to get pregnant after the fallopian tube removal?

Doctor's answer:

This requires understanding the process of pregnancy. For women, it involves the ovaries producing eggs, which then travel into the fallopian tubes and move rapidly toward the uterus. During this process, they meet with sperm to form a fertilized egg. The egg continues to move into the uterus and implants, at which point development begins.
Now, if you have your fallopian tubes removed, this prevents the eggs from meeting with sperm, and thus pregnancy cannot occur. However, if only one fallopian tube is removed and the other is normal, pregnancy is still possible.
