Is it normal for uterine fibroids to shed with menstruation?

Patient's question:

I've been putting off getting surgery, and as a result, some foreign objects have been discharged from below this time. Is it normal for uterine fibroids to fall off with menstruation?

Doctor's answer:

Uterine fibroids do not shed with menstruation. Uterine fibroids do not disappear on their own; once they reappear, they remain inside the uterus. If small fibroids are present and the person ages, they may gradually grow larger, but they will not shed with menstruation. What sheds during menstruation are endometrial tissue fragments, not uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids can be treated with blood-activating and blood-stasis-resolving medications for symptomatic relief. If they are large, surgical intervention is necessary.
