Can you still get pregnant after taking emergency contraception and having bleeding?

Patient's question:

Can I still get pregnant after taking emergency contraception and bleeding? I bled 3 days after taking the pill.

Doctor's answer:

Emergency contraception pills are taken orally within 72 hours of intercourse and can provide some contraceptive effects. However, these pills should absolutely not be taken long-term to avoid endocrine disorders. The progesterone contained in emergency contraception pills can lead to withdrawal bleeding symptoms within one week after stopping the medication, which is essentially menstruation. If menstruation has already occurred, pregnancy is unlikely. If menstruation does not occur, pregnancy may be possible.
