How can one confirm if it is an ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I'm planning to have a child with my husband because we haven't been pregnant before, so we don't understand much about pregnancy. I've heard about something called ectopic pregnancy long ago, and it's said to be very dangerous. I'd like to understand it first. How can you confirm if it's ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

After a missed period, if a pregnancy test confirms pregnancy, it's advisable to visit a hospital for an ultrasound examination. If a gestational sac is visible in the uterus, in most cases, this indicates an intrauterine pregnancy. If no gestational sac is observed in the uterus, it could be due to a short delivery time and the sac has not yet reached the uterine cavity. If lower abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding reoccurs, combined with careful ultrasound and hCG testing, and no gestational sac is seen in the uterus, this may suggest an ectopic pregnancy.
