Does the bleeding last long after medication abortion?

Patient's question:

My friend was carefully checked and found to be pregnant a few days ago. My friend doesn't want to have a child and wants to get rid of the one in her belly. The doctor at the hospital said that because the pregnancy was short, it could be terminated with medication. What should my friend do if the bleeding lasts a long time after the medication abortion?

Doctor's answer:

If incomplete expulsion of the gestational sac leads to prolonged bleeding after medication abortion and incomplete miscarriage, a urine pregnancy test and careful ultrasound examination should be conducted in the hospital. If the patient is diagnosed with incomplete miscarriage, a D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure should be performed, and vaginal bleeding typically stops within 10 days after the surgery. If incomplete shedding of the decidua causes prolonged bleeding but with a small volume, oral herbs such as Motherwort or the Chinese herbal decoction Shenghua Tang can be taken. Alternatively, oxytocin can be administered under anesthesia to enhance uterine contractions and expel residual decidua tissue. If the bleeding volume is less than a normal menstrual period, the patient should also undergo a D&C procedure at the hospital.
