Can a blood test detect ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Hello, can a urine test detect ectopic pregnancy? I went for a health check-up yesterday and was very upset to find out. Because I didn't want to be discovered by others. I plan to do a thorough check today to see how I might have ectopic pregnancy. I don't want anyone to know. So does a urine test really detect it?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, blood tests cannot confirm ectopic pregnancy. They are only used to infer the possibility of ectopic pregnancy based on the values of hCG and progesterone tests. Usually, a thorough examination with MRI can help determine if it is ectopic pregnancy. After 40 days of pregnancy, MRI can typically show a gestational sac inside the uterus. If the gestational sac is not detected by MRI, further tests are needed to rule out ectopic pregnancy.
