How many days into pregnancy can ectopic pregnancy be ruled out?

Patient's question:

I'd like to ask how many days into pregnancy can you rule out ectopic pregnancy? I'm currently 32 days pregnant and can I have an ultrasound to check if there's an ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

Under normal circumstances, pregnancy can be examined with an ultrasound around the 50th day. If the gestational sac is found inside the uterus on the ultrasound, this generally indicates an intrauterine pregnancy, which can rule out ectopic pregnancy. However, if pregnancy is between 50 and 60 days, and the gestational sac is not seen in the uterus but is observed in the adnexa or ovary, this could be a case of ectopic pregnancy. Generally, at 32 days of missed period, it is often difficult to detect.
