On the third day of medication abortion, there was no blood.

Patient's question:

I had sex with my boyfriend last month, and since we didn't use any protection during the process, I accidentally got pregnant. Around 20 days into the pregnancy, I decided to have a medication abortion. On the third day of the medication abortion, I didn't see any blood. Is this because the abortion wasn't successful or something else?

Doctor's answer:

On the third day after medication abortion, there is no bleeding considered it could be a complete miscarriage. If the medication abortion is not complete, it may lead to prolonged bleeding or more discharge. Normally, after medication abortion, there may be a small amount of vaginal bleeding and mild abdominal pain for about a week. As long as the discharge is not excessive and the bleeding duration is short, it is generally not a major issue. Since there is no discharge on the third day, you can have a follow-up ultrasound in about a week to check if the miscarriage has been completely cleared.
