Normal pregnancy followed by another pregnancy can lead to an ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Recently, my husband and I are preparing to have a second child. Since I'm not very young anymore, I'm very afraid of the risks involved in having a second child. Moreover, I've heard that ectopic pregnancies are becoming more common these days. My first pregnancy was a completely normal vaginal delivery. I would like to ask the doctor if a uterus that has previously carried a normal pregnancy can still experience an ectopic pregnancy in the future?

Doctor's answer:

A first pregnancy with a normal vaginal delivery, a second pregnancy can also result in an ectopic pregnancy. This is because one of the causes of ectopic pregnancy is inflammation of the uterine appendages leading to partial blockage of the fallopian tubes, which can cause impaired movement of the fertilized egg and implantation outside the uterus, resulting in an ectopic pregnancy. Of course, you don't need to be too anxious. Once you suspect you might be pregnant, around 40 days after your period, it's best to go to the hospital for an MRI examination to determine if you have an ectopic pregnancy.
