How to determine if it's menstrual irregularity or pregnancy?

Patient's question:

This month, my period hasn't arrived yet. Last month, I had sexual relations with my boyfriend again. How can you speculate about menstrual irregularity and pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, irregular menstruation can manifest as prolonged periods, delayed menstruation, or changes in menstrual flow volume (either too little or too much). If your menstrual cycle is usually regular and you experience a delay of one week, it is not necessarily indicative of pregnancy. Pregnancy typically involves symptoms such as frequent urination, breast tenderness, morning nausea, and a preference for avoiding greasy foods, whereas simple menstrual delay does not present these symptoms. However, some people may not exhibit early pregnancy symptoms, making it difficult to distinguish. In such cases, you can use an early pregnancy test kit to test first-morning urine. If two lines appear, it means you are pregnant, and if only one line appears, it means you are not pregnant.
