Is it normal for ectopic pregnancy to have heavy bleeding?

Patient's question:

My sister suddenly had stomach pain last night and passed out. We quickly took her to the emergency department. A gynecological ultrasound revealed an ectopic pregnancy with rupture and significant bleeding. We were then taken to the gynecology department for surgery. I would like to consult if it's normal for ectopic pregnancy to have a large amount of bleeding?

Doctor's answer:

For ectopic pregnancy, also known as tubal pregnancy, it is generally more common in the fallopian tubes. Due to the relatively narrow lumen of the fallopian tubes, ectopic pregnancy rupture can easily lead to severe rebleeding. When the bleeding from ectopic pregnancy is significant, it can easily cause hypovolemic shock, and in severe cases, it may pose a life-threatening risk. Therefore, early surgical treatment is necessary. Your sister has already undergone surgical treatment and the bleeding has been stopped. If the bleeding is still heavy, further surgical intervention may be required to prevent anemia and to ensure proper recovery.
