Features: Egypt: Area 1,002,000 square kilometers. It spans both Asia and Africa, with most of its territory located in the northeastern part of Africa, while a small portion of its territory (the Sinai Peninsula) is in the southwestern corner of Asia. It borders Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, the Red Sea to the east, and Palestine to the east, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. The coastline is about 2,700 kilometers long. 96% of the country is desert. The highest peak, Mount Sibayna, has an altitude of 2,187 meters. The Nile River runs through the country from north to south, spanning 1,350 kilometers, forming narrow valleys about 3-16 kilometers wide on both banks, and creating a 24,000-square-kilometer delta at the mouth, where 99% of the population resides in only 4% of the country's area in the valleys and delta. The Suez Canal is a vital transportation route connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Major lakes include the Great Bitter Lake and Lake Timsahe, as well as the Aswan High Dam-formed largest artificial lake in Africa—the Lake Nasser (5,000 square kilometers). The country is generally arid and receives little rainfall. The Nile Delta and northern coastal regions have a subtropical Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures of 12°C in January and 26°C in July, and average annual precipitation of 50-200 millimeters. The rest of the country has a tropical desert climate, with hot and dry conditions, where temperatures in desert areas can reach 40°C, and average annual precipitation is less than 30 millimeters. Sandstorms, known as the "Fiftieth Wind," often occur between April and May, carrying sand and stones, which can damage crops. Population: 62,687,000 (January 1998), with 51.2% male citizens and 48.8% female citizens, a growth rate of 2.9% annually. The majority are Arabs, accounting for about 87%, and they practice Islam. Additionally, there are Copts who practice Christianity, as well as Bedouins and Nubians. The official language is Arabic.
