Does the birth control pill cause hair loss?

Patient's question:

I currently have sex with my boyfriend without using condoms because I feel it's different with them. I take birth control pills, and I've been doing this for about two years. However, one day my colleague saw a news report and told me that taking birth control pills frequently can cause acne. I seem to have acne often too. Do birth control pills really cause acne?

Doctor's answer:

First, acne is currently quite severe and has reappeared among young people. It may be caused by multiple different factors, so it may not necessarily be related to your medication. Second, frequent use of birth control pills may lead to reoccurrence of hormonal issues in women, which could cause some physical manifestations such as weight gain. However, in most cases, it is not significantly related to acne. It is recommended that you consider alternative methods of birth control.
