How do you know if you have an ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Since the second child policy was relaxed, my mother-in-law has been urging us to have a second child. After waiting for a year, we finally did, and now it's been three months. But recently, I've been experiencing some spotting. I stayed in bed for a few days and still have some blood streaks. I heard from others that this could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. I want to ask the doctor how can I know if I have an ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

Around two months into pregnancy, an initial ultrasound examination can be performed to check the location of the gestational sac. As long as a gestational sac is present in the uterus and normal embryonic heartbeat is observed, ectopic pregnancy can be ruled out. Ectopic pregnancy often leads to vaginal bleeding during the second to third month of pregnancy, or even rupture of the gestational sac, causing acute abdominal pain. Currently, if there are blood streaks, it may indicate threatened miscarriage, commonly seen in cases of low progesterone or excessive fatigue. An ultrasound examination can be conducted first to assess the situation.
