Features: Mr. Zhang Guohui has been engaged in the study of modern Chinese economic history for over 50 years. The book focuses on the operational activities of capitalist economy in modern China in both production and circulation domains. It covers various fields such as steamship brokerage, industrial enterprises of the Self-Strengthening Movement, import and export trade, coal mining, metallurgy, silk reeling, and more. During his research, the author examined a large number of original archives, local chronicles, collected works, domestic and foreign newspapers and books, analyzing them meticulously with solid evidence. He profoundly reveals the comprador characteristics of modern Chinese capitalist development under semi-colonial conditions, as well as the arduous and challenging development process, which offers valuable insights for understanding China's current economic development. The book strictly adheres to historical facts, providing detailed analyses of the emergence, development, internal connections, and changes of modern enterprises under various systems, rather than generalizations. It outlines a clear developmental trajectory and explores the characteristics reflected in their development, as well as their impacts and historical roles under specific historical conditions. In terms of circulation, the book extensively examines traditional financial institutions such as money changers and draft brokers, analyzing their operational status in domestic and foreign commerce and trade. It investigates how these institutions evolved from gradual functional changes to fundamental shifts in nature during the socioeconomic process. In summary, over the past 50 years, my research has largely focused on exploring hidden truths and filling gaps in these two aspects. Most of the papers selected for this book represent research achievements from that period. In terms of organization, the papers are arranged in chronological order based on their publication dates.
