Features: Basic English Course (Volumes 1 and 2) is a professional textbook designed for the learning characteristics of first- and second-year students of English majors in higher education institutions, in accordance with the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education promulgated by the Ministry of Education in April 2000. The main features of this textbook are as follows:
1. It breaks away from the drawbacks and limitations of the traditional "cramming" teaching method in English reading courses, emphasizing the cultivation of students' independent learning and research abilities. The student workbook of this textbook does not include a vocabulary list, as years of teaching experience have shown that students can only deepen their understanding of vocabulary and content by actively consulting dictionaries. To help students identify and think about problems while studying the texts, we divide each Text A into left and right columns. The right column contains key points for self-study and classroom discussions, as well as space for students to take notes. This layout fully reflects the student-centered teaching philosophy, enabling students to develop independent reading, comprehension, learning, and thinking skills. In the accompanying teacher's manual, we provide as detailed teaching guidance as possible to reduce the burden on teachers during preparation and expand the amount of information in the classroom.
2. The textbook features a wide and fresh selection of materials. Text A is primarily selected from renowned works, while Text B consists of articles related to the theme of Text A but with different styles, perspectives, or a contemporary touch. This allows students to study classic English masterpieces, engage with the latest trends, learn relevant views and knowledge on the same topics, and develop the ability to think and analyze independently through comparisons of different styles and perspectives.
3. The post-text exercises in this textbook are divided into in-class and out-of-class activities, which is another innovation. English learning is a comprehensive process of improving fundamental skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Basic English is one of the essential foundational courses for English majors. In addition to practicing new language points related to the text, students also need to review and consolidate their existing language foundation and broaden their knowledge. Both students and teachers can flexibly adjust the amount of practice based on actual language learning needs. During the trial period, feedback from instructors and students was incorporated, and further improvements and refinements were made to the layout and design. We hope to offer students and teachers a textbook with a completely new style.
