Features: This book is compiled by the author based on over 40 years of teaching experience at Tsinghua University and hosting more than 40 sessions of engineer training classes across the country, as well as completing over 200 geotechnical engineering projects. It systematically explains the fundamental theories of soil mechanics and introduces new technologies and advanced experiences in foundation engineering from around the world. The book is divided into 11 chapters: Introduction; Engineering Geology; Physical Properties of Soil and Engineering Classification; Compressibility of Soil and Settlement Calculation; Shear Strength of Soil and Bearing Capacity of Foundations; Earth Pressure and Slope Stability; Geotechnical Investigation for Engineering Construction; Design of Shallow Foundations on Natural Ground; Pile Foundations and Deep Foundations; Treatment of Soft Ground; Special Soil Foundations; Foundation Engineering in Seismic Areas. The content is concise, highlights key points, is illustrated with diagrams, and is easy for self-study. Each chapter includes review questions, exercises, and answers. To improve teaching quality, Tsinghua University Audio-Visual Publishing House has released a set of slides compiled by the author, which is a result of the author's extensive experience in overseas lectures and inspections of more than ten countries, as well as decades of research and surveys in China. Since its first edition in 1982 and the second edition in 1989, more than 100 universities and engineer training classes across the country have adopted this book as a textbook, widely recognized for its practicality and popularity. Based on the nine new codes newly issued in China after the second edition and domestic and international new technological achievements, the author has updated and enriched the content for the third edition of this book. This book can be used as a textbook for undergraduate and in-service engineer training classes in various disciplines such as civil engineering, railway, transportation, geology, metallurgy, petroleum, agriculture, and forestry. For diploma programs in related fields, certain minor theoretical and special soil foundation content can be omitted, and the book can still be used as a textbook. This book is also suitable for engineers in architectural design institutes, geotechnical investigation institutes, and construction companies for reference. The cover design features the European Gate of Spain.
